There’s a common misconception that temporary workers earn less income than their permanent counterparts. Permanent jobs provide the security of long-term employment, but according to a recent survey, people in temporary positions may actually earn more hourly income.
A JobsOutlook survey by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation found that 36 percent of employers said that temporary workers earn more money than they would if they had a permanent contract with the company. Even further, 56 percent of the companies surveyed said there is no difference in salary between permanent and temporary employees, and only two percent said that permanent employees earn more.
The data found in this survey indicates a positive pattern for temp workers in America, with the proportion of employers stating that temporary workers earn higher wages increasing from 19 percent in March of 2014 to 36 percent in January of 2015.
Key Skills When You Need Them
It shouldn’t be surprising that there isn’t a drop off in pay between temporary and permanent employees. Three quarters of employers surveyed said the primary reason for taking on temporary workers was to gain “short-term access to key strategic skills.” Basically, employers want the skills they need, when they need them.
They don’t mind paying big bucks for talent over a three or four month period; the problem arises when they have to hire a full time worker when they only need their skills for a temporary amount of time. The survey went on to say that 93 percent of employers have a limited capacity to take on more work, and would rather pay more for a temporary worker in order to boost production.
