A candidate’s interviewing strategy will reveal a lot about their character, maturity, preparedness and enthusiasm for the position.

While social media profiles and resumes have become a valuable tool for analyzing and screening candidates, there’s still no substitute for the in-person interview. Effective interviewing techniques will reveal a lot about a perspective candidate’s, maturity, preparedness, and enthusiasm for the position.

There are highly obvious things to watch for at interviews – like showing up on time, being honest and dressing appropriately. But there are also some not so obvious interview tactics to watch for when selecting the right hire for the job.

Here are five effective interviewing techniques:

  1. Preparation: One strategy that many job candidates ignore is studying the company beforehand. Are they knowledgeable about your company, your customers and your specialties? In the high speed information age we live in, a candidate’s failure to adequately research your company may be a sign of laziness, an inability to prepare correctly or an overall lack of enthusiasm toward the role.
  2. Eye Contact and Body Language: Establishing and maintaining eye-contact is one of the most powerful forms of non-verbal communication. An interviewee who looks you in the eye exudes confidence, while one who doesn’t exudes doubt. Additionally, body language cues such as slouching, fidgeting and frowning don’t exactly make a candidate particularly appealing.[1]
  3. Honesty: It can be very easy for applicants to fall into the trap of trying to fit themselves into a certain mold. Instead of trying to sell you on themselves, they try to sell you on who they think you want them to be. Be wary of these applicants and make sure you have your lie-detector cap on during any interview.
  4. Examples Instead of Answers: When you ask an interviewee how good their multitasking abilities are, you don’t want to hear them say ”good” and then move on to the next question. Be on the lookout for interviewees who provide you with examples to answer your questions about their skills and experiences, as opposed to unqualifiable statements. Examples provide context and detail.
  5. The Follow-Up: This is something that is often overlooked and while it may not always be a deal-breaker, it certainly could be a tiebreaker. Following up with a short two-three sentence thank you email within 24 – 48 hours shows that an applicant is very serious about the position and genuinely appreciated the opportunity to interview with you.

The most important thing to look for in an interviewee is confidence.
